Introduction / History

The Bafumen people live in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, particularly in the Menchum Division around the Wum area. They are closely associated with the Mmen-speaking communities, and their primary language is Mmen, a Grassfields Bantu language spoken mainly in Bafumen and surrounding villages. Their broader cultural setting shares features with neighboring Grassfields societies, which often maintain strong kinship ties, clan structures, and oral traditions. The region's history includes interactions with nearby chiefdoms and the wider developments of the Cameroonian Grassfields.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Bafumen households generally revolve around extended family networks where cooperation in farming, childrearing, and community affairs is common. Local livelihoods traditionally include agriculture, small-scale animal husbandry, and craft production typical of Grassfields communities. Social life involves cooperation during planting and harvest seasons, responsibilities shared between families, and participation in communal work.

Festivals, storytelling, and dance remain important expressions of identity. As in many Grassfields areas, artistic traditions such as woodcarving, pottery, and weaving enrich everyday and ceremonial life. Community rhythms follow seasonal cycles, with markets and household labor shaping most days.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bafumen people's primary religious identity is Christianity, though it is often blended with traditional religion. Scripture is available in a language they understand, as Mmen-language resources include audio Scripture and the JESUS Film.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bafumen people benefit from spiritual encouragement that fosters understanding of God's word, opportunities to explore the message of Christ, and guidance for emerging believers. In daily life, they also face ongoing needs typical of rural communities, such as sustainable livelihoods, educational opportunities, and support for community well-being. Long-term transformation requires both spiritual vitality and strengthened social structures rooted in peace, cooperation, and hope.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Bafumen people to encounter God's truth through scripture and for open hearts as they engage with available Mmen-language resources.
Pray for God to raise faithful local believers who can grow in maturity and share Christ's love among their own people and neighboring groups.
Pray for strengthened families, peacemaking in community life, and resilience in the face of economic and social challenges.
Pray for emerging leaders—both community and spiritual—to walk in humility, wisdom, and courage.
Pray that the Bafumen will one day contribute to global mission efforts, bringing blessing far beyond their region.
